Sydney 19-24. March 2018

There are 1,600 native bee species in Australia. While most of them do not produce honey, they are crucial for pollination. Because of the threats to the bees’ natural habitat, Weleda Australia launched the Bee B&B Hotel project. This conservation initiative supports the construction of bee hotels in school gardens.

Top five things I learnt from Weleda Australia

Question everything. Learn Something. Answer nothing. T his is the first thing I learnt in my first week of the Global Garden journey. It’s been full of thought provoking experiences. I have asked a million questions and have learnt so much. ‘Don’t worry, there’s no chance that after one week I’m professing to be a ‘guru’ with all the answers. But I did want to share my top five learnings from  my week in Sydney, Australia.’ Some of the ground we have covered this week Sowing seeds and taking Biodynamics at Warrah Farm Building a Bee Hotel with Alison from Bee-cology as part of the Weleda Bee B&B school program Detoxing the beauty bag in an Eco Make Up Masterclass Celebrating our oceans and Project Aware’s milestone of removing 1 million pieces of debris from our ocean floor Learning to get my Leica camera off auto-mode with Photo Workshop Australia Sydney in a snap shot What is biodynamic farming, and how is it different to organic? Biodynamic gardening is the next step to organic farming. …

Where would we bee…?

Have you ever wondered what would happen if we had no bees? I usually love ‘What if’ style wonders… but I don’t like this one, one bit. Because the reality is we would have no fruit. No vegetables. No flowers. If pollinators disappear, we will all get stung. Pollination is vital to plants, to bees, to humans. Without it plants can’t reproduce. If don’t give bees a safe home in a biodiverse environment, they can’t give one back to us. ‘Native bees are amazing little creatures that we really want to have in our gardens, at school, wherever they may be. They are amazing pollinators and that’s just what our plants need to grow the fruit, vegies and flowers we love.’ Costa Georgiadis, Gardening Australia host. What is causing a decline in the bee population? Disease, the Varroa Mite parasite, pesticides as well as plant mono culture and changing climates are the lead causes. How can we bee the solution? New research suggests that to strengthen the immune system of the bees to keep them …

Healthy soil. Healthy people.

Biodynamics 101 Biodynamics is a massive topic, one very hard to distil down. I asked Rob from The Warrah Society Biodynamic Farm to give me the simple low down. The Global Garden journey will give us lots of opportunities for a deeper understanding of Biodynamics, but for now let’s start at the start. In 1924, German farmers came to the founder of Weleda, Rudolf Steiner with their concerns about increasing use of chemicals deteriorating the quality of their soil. The philosophies Steiner shared with them during this time became the principles of Biodynamic farming that are so popular today. These principles are fundamentally very simple. ‘Less chemicals going into the earth means less chemicals going into human beings.’ What is Biodynamic farming? Biodynamics is a farm-forward approach to healing the planet through conscious agriculture. It’s about nature helping nature by taking the art of farming and enriching it with a philosophical and spiritual meaning. With the purpose to create ecological, social, and economic sustainability. ‘Biodynamic farming is much more than a method, it is a …

Green beauty for beginners

Detoxing the make-up bag Today is Day One of the Global Garden journey. As if the Cinderella experience couldn’t get any better. I had a personal natural beauty make-up masterclass with the incredibly talented Eco Make-up Artist Liv Lundelius. Learning about the importance of choosing natural skin care and make up whilst mastering an effortless look for my travels. Spoilt much! I must admit that I have been really uncomfortable not know what I am really putting on my face and my body when it comes to cosmetics, but I felt so daunted about learning right from wrong that I didn’t know where to start. Anyone with me? Well today, I’m feeling much better. Because as they say, knowledge is power. With knowledge you can make change. Here’s what I learnt today. Why change is good. Learn how to read the real truth.  Unfortunately cosmetic ingredients are widely unregulated. Whilst we all know that just because it says something on the packaging doesn’t necessarily mean it’s true. But until we know otherwise sometimes, scarily we …

I’ve got this in the bag.

What to pack to wander the Weleda World By the time you’re reading this the bag is packed, the journey has started. Let’s hope that I have got this packing business sorted and everything I need is on the journey with me. On shorter trips I like to travel lightly, using carry-on only as much as possible. I love being free to explore from the moment I land. But by no means is this a small trip ‘I definitely haven’t packed lightly! My bag needs to be as ready for any adventure as I do.’ The Weleda team have an epic line up of activities planned – from working with the growers in garden harvests in New Zealand, visiting anthroposophic doctors in under privileged medical centres in Brazil and tending the Pomegranate and Sea Buck Thorn fields in Italy to sailing on the Sydney Harbour in Australia, attending the Organic Beauty Awards in Sweden and Espace day spa days in Paris. Everything in this bag needs to have me ready for any adventure. ‘Three months, …

The Global Garden journey. Here we go.

Pack your bags, let’s wander the Weleda World. From March to June it’s time to embark on a carbon-neutral journey to eleven Weleda bucket-list worthy locations around the world. Colourful pomegranate shrubs in Italy, gardens 1200 metres above sea level in Argentina…. I get excited just thinking about it. Weleda Global Garden is a modern-day version of the Roman ‘Grand Tour’. A journey of curiosity, exploration and discovery learning all about the stories and people behind Weleda. Let’s experience each Weleda location together – including biodynamic gardens, sourcing projects, biodiversity projects and anthroposophy. Together, we’ll meet the gardeners and growers, learning about the natural plant ingredients, bee projects, spa treatments, and Steiner himself. ‘I’ll be your virtual tour guide – your eyes, your ears and your hands so you can discover the Weleda Global Garden whilst I do.’ But, before we get started I bet you want to know where we are heading.     • Sydney / Australia                                      …

Packing a low-tox beauty bag

Hi Global Gardeners! Only one week to go before take-off… packing time has begun. Let’s get started with what’s going in the beauty bag. Three months on the road means I need to travel light. Only the beauty ‘best-of’s’ are coming on this trip with me. Luckily my ‘beauty regime’ is a pretty simple and streamlined exercise regardless of travel so cutting down the list wasn’t too daunting a task. And so…here’s my favourite toxin-free Weleda travel essentials that have made it into the beauty kit. ‘All of these products are free from synthetic preservatives, fragrances, colourants and raw materials derived from mineral oils. The ones that get a big tick from me are generally concentrated products that you don’t need much of to go a long way. Less packaging, less weight with maximum results are winners in my book.’ What’s in the bag Skin Food The is such an amazing all-rounder… dry skin doesn’t stand a chance against it. I like my products to be multi-purpose so I’ll be using this as an intensive …

The amature’s in-complete guide to travel photography

I wish I could say that I am a professional photographer and this is my fool-proof list of how to pack the ultimate kit for a three-month photography trip… but unfortunately that would be lies. In six days I head off of the Global Garden trip journey, here’s my amature’s guide to packing a camera bag worthy of the trip. Working as a Creative Director for a global advertising agency I have been so lucky to work with some of best photographers and film makers in the business. The problem being that this sets such high standards for type of work I want to produce on this trip for you guys with just little- old-me to make it happen. If only I could pack the whole crew in my bag and take them with me. ‘For the last few months I have been trying to upskill in all things photography and film making. I tell you, it’s been a steeper learning curve that any mountain I have climbed on my micro adventures.’ Luckily, I have …

Meet the Weleda Global Garden winner

Hi everyone. I’m Lauren Doolan, a Australian blogger also known as Micro Adventurist. Nice to meet you all. On weekdays I work as a Creative Director, on weekends on my blog and social channels @Micro_Adventurist. Not that it feels like work.  I’m an endlessly curious blogger, camera in hand, hunting out the most exciting, soul soaring, bite-size adventures in my own backyard of Melbourne and beyond. It’s my mission to discover the best weekend wanders that inspires us all to disconnect the phone, reconnect from nature and escape the ordinary. So, what is a Micro Adventure you ask? It’s a simple, affordable, adrenalin pumping adventure anyone can take over a weekend, a day, even an afternoon, rather than waiting for a two week block of holidays. ‘We don’t work hard all week to sit on the couch, right!’ Linda Ellis’ poem, ‘The Dash’ had a big impact on me. It’s about how we start and end our lives with only a date. That ‘our life’ is distilled down to the tiny little ‘–‘ or ‘Dash’ …

What to expect on the trip of a lifetime.

There are many quotes along the lines of ‘No expectations, no disappointments’. But there’s no need to worry about that when it comes to the Weleda Global Garden trip. People have asked me what my expectations are for the trip… and to be honest I only have one. And that is to grow. A lot. Weleda, anthroposophic medicine, biodynamic farming not to mention film making, photography and editing are all new worlds for me. ‘My philosophy is to expect nothing and appreciate everything. To give everything my 100% best go and to be grateful for every step of this journey.’ Just because I’m trying to go into the trip without expectations doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have them! The Weleda team have got a great line up of experiences planned. I can’t help myself but share some of them with you. So, feel free to have great expectations… you will not be disappointed. Sydney / Australia Students will become the teachers when we learn about the importance of protecting nature’s hardest working pollinators at the Weleda …
